Description:Klickitat Valley Health is accepting applications for a Full-time RN in the Surgery Department.

This day shift position offers 40 hours/week and applicant must be flexible to work Monday-Thursday or Monday-Friday depending on the needs of the department. The Surgical Services RN is responsible for patient care in all nursing areas of the surgery department including Pre-op, Circulator and Post Anesthesia care (PACU) as defined by the Standards and Scope of Practice for the Registered Nurse {Nursing Practice Act (RCW 18.79.010-18.79.902)}. The RN is an important member of the healthcare team and works collaboratively with the other members of the Surgical Services department to provide optimal outcomes for our patients.
Duties:• Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served in Surgical Services
• Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development and provide services accordingly
• Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards
• Can assess symptoms and interpret changes in patient conditions and respond appropriately
• Initiate nursing orders and notify physician as needed
• Actively participates in the required surgical time-out process

Circulator:
• Demonstrates knowledge of principles of asepsis and sterile technique
• Assumes leadership of the OR team during cases and is responsible for the smooth and safe functioning of the OR during surgery
• With scrub, conducts accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts according to policy
• Monitors and calls attention to breaks in sterile technique
• Knows locations of supplies, instruments specialty trays and electronic equipment
• Set-up of supplies, instruments, specialty trays and the programming of electronic equipment
• Responsible to troubleshoot to help solve operational problems of surgical equipment
• Proper patient positioning for a variety of surgical procedures, including immobilization or restraint
• Responsible for all aspects of patient safety during surgical procedures
• Accurately documents times, personnel, procedures and charges in the patient’s OR record
• Gives report to PACU nurse

Secondary Functions (but not limited to):
• Functions as a scrub nurse when required

PACU:
• Regularly collects and records vital signs
• Documents recovery progression in electronic medical record
• Administers IV fluids as ordered by physician
• Administers IV push and IV continuous drip as ordered by physician
• Observes and interprets EKG rhythms
• Recognizes and reports abnormal lab values
• Performs emergency life saving measures including external defibrillation/administer emergency drugs
• Will undergo 40 hours of supervised training by a fully trained PACU nurse including 8 hours of airway management under direction of an Anesthesia provider

Pre-Op:
• Greets patient and family and escorts them to patient pre-op area
• Ensures patient and family have a thorough understanding of procedure and estimated length of surgery and recovery and provide additional information as needed
• Communicates special needs or concerns to physician
• Collects and records vitals in electronic medical record
• Reviews pre-op checklist with patient
• Confirms and marks surgical site
• Starts IV
Qualifications:Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

Education:
• Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• RN license in Washington State required.
• Current BLS, ACLS, PALS Certification required.
• Current Operating Room Nurse Certification preferred.

Experience:
• Two years nursing experience in a perioperative setting or successful completion of hospital’s surgery nursing internship program preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
• Requires critical thinking skills, ability to make good decisions, listen and accept advice from others, demonstrate maturity and good judgement and the ability to work with regular supervision.
• Demonstrate a through working knowledge of nursing theory, techniques, principles and practice in order to holistically care for the patient; as well as surgical interventions/procedures, Aseptic techniques, instrumentation and sterilization process.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the function, set-up, use, storage location of: surgical supplies, instruments, specialty trays, electronic equipment, etc. and is responsible for troubleshooting operational problems of surgical equipment.
• Perform various sensory requirements such as: vision, speech, smell, touch, manual dexterity, fine motor skills and hearing in order to assess and treat the patient accurately.
• Promote/develop/deliver excellent customer service to both internal (patients and staff) and external customers (visitors and vendors).
• Demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families, physicians, volunteers and the community.
• Work productively, cohesively within a team and resolve conflict/differences in a positive manner.
• Work in a stressful, fast-paced/demanding environment and take appropriate action to ensure quality of patient care, ability to cope with both physical and emotional demands of the job.
• Maintain a calm and composed manner in emergency/stressful situations, taking appropriate action as necessary.
• Demonstrate attention to detail and high degree of accuracy, risk of error could result in significant harm or loss.
• Experience with using everyday computer electronic technology tools (e.g., email, data retrieval, voicemail, and internet/intranet) as well as ability to effectively utilize an electronic medical record (EMR), as well as use/handle all medical equipment/instruments utilized in the care of the patient.
• Adaptability is essential to manage the needs of a department with unpredictable volume and limited staff.
