Klickitat Valley Health is now accepting applications for a Part-time Clinical Lab Assistant in the laboratory. This position offers two day shifts with a total of 16 hours per week.
Under general supervision, the Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) is responsible for performing phlebotomy, processing specimens for testing and sending out, running automated equipment, plating cultures and performing testing procedures as defined by State and Federal regulations. In addition, the CLA serves patients by performing patient screening procedures; collecting, transporting and/or receiving patient specimens for laboratory testing; responding to patient requests for information in accordance with organization policies and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The CLA also works in conjunction with health care providers and other staff members by answering phones, responding to requests for information and by performing other duties assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Medical Director. The Lab Assistant demonstrates excellence in customer service during interactions with employees, managers/supervisors, patients, patient family members, customers, vendors, etc. and works collaboratively with colleagues and departments throughout the organization to provide optimal care services in a professional, ethical and knowledgeable fashion. This individual must maintain a safe, clean and organized work environment. The CLA is aware of the potential exposure to internal and external hazardous materials, including but not limited to: blood and blood borne pathogens, infectious/communicable diseases, potential physical injury well caring for patients.
Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with other patient records and/or the Laboratory Information System; resolving discrepancies or bringing them to the attention of the Laboratory Manager. Verifies patient identification through the use of two separate identifiers (name, DOB, MRN, account number).
Enters orders for laboratory testing and patient or specimen information into the Laboratory Information System.
Registers patients on the computer and ensures all necessary signatures and acknowledgments are obtained.
Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
Verifies identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
Draws blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe or butterfly venipuncture methods, using excellent technique to minimize pain or discomfort for the patient. Draws blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
o Applies tourniquet, locates accessible vein/capillary, swabs puncture area with antiseptic and inserts needle/lancet into vein/capillary to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
o Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe or butterfly venipuncture methods. Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
o Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
o Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies.
o Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards and/or hospital policy and procedure.
Matches laboratory labels to specimen tubes.
Collects specimens at specific time intervals for tests, such as those assessing therapeutic drug levels.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating and noting times of collection.
Performs bleeding-time tests and enters results into the Laboratory Information System; notifying the MT/MLT on duty for verification of results.
Monitor therapeutic phlebotomy blood donors during and after procedures to ensure health, safety and comfort.
Processes blood or other fluid samples for further analysis by other medical professionals.
Organizes or cleans blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile, and all needles, syringes or related items are of first-time use.
Provide sample analysis results to physicians to assist diagnosis.
Train other medical personnel in phlebotomy or laboratory techniques.
Transport specimens or fluid samples from collection sites to laboratories.
Conduct waived testing such as Rapid Strep, Influenza A & B and RSV in accordance with personal training level and the needs of the organization.
Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the appropriate quality control log, identifying and reporting needed changes.
Maintains safe, secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying the Laboratory Manager of unresolved orders.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, and federal, state and local requirements.
Enhances phlebotomy department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and novel processes; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED required.
Current Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist certification required, or the current ability to qualify for and obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, AAB or other certifying agency is preferred.
Current BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
Experience with phlebotomy functions or successful completion of a hospital based phlebotomy course required.
Experience with drug screen specimen collection and basic specimen selection, handling, and storage activities, preferred.
Meets education/licensure requirement, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience required.
Demonstrates knowledge of basic Phlebotomy skills (i.e. venipuncture process, etc.); patients rights; universal precautions; infection control, etc.
Requires critical thinking skills, ability to make good decisions, listen and accept advice from others, demonstrate maturity and good judgment and the ability to work with regular supervision.
Perform various sensory requirements such as: vision, speech, touch, manual dexterity, fine motor skills and hearing while performing job duties.
Promote/deliver excellent customer service to both internal (patients and staff) and external customers (visitors and vendors) in order to assess and collect lab specimens properly and with minimal pain/discomfort for the patient.
