Description:Klickitat Valley Health is now accepting applications for a casual Unit Secretary position on the Acute Care unit.

This position provides back-up coverage for current staff during vacations, leaves, and other time off, and does not offer any guarantee of hours per week. Hours are dependent on departmental need. Flexibility in scheduling is essential and applicants must have the ability to work varied days and shifts.

The Unit Secretary is one who provides administrative support to the nursing staff and providers on the unit, and acts as a communication liaison with other departments including the lab, radiology, respiratory therapy, Emergency Department, physical therapy, housekeeping and dietary.

Duties:• Initiates and assembles and maintains patient charts and other records as required.
• Completes and maintains the Medact file system for the patients, ensures that the information is current and up to date by entering orders/patient demographics/charges into CPSI system along with submitting new orders from the physician/provider, maintaining patient census and other patient logs, etc.
• Answers unit telephone and call light system and keeps the nursing staff informed of needs/requests of patient, physician/provider, staff or other third parties.
• Provides clerical assistance and support for other nursing department areas, such as: Discharge Planning, Surgery, Infection Prevention, Nursing Administration, etc.
• Maintains awareness of patient needs based on age specific factors, as well as being aware of the patient’s physical and psychosocial needs.
• Provides public relations and communication contact with patients, family members and other people in the general public.
• Covers front registration desk when needed, registers patients in computer system and answers phone
• Maintains office supplies used on the nursing unit.
• Maintains files and ensures records are filed correctly, ensures all forms are current.
• Participates in quality review and performance improvement process.
• Complies with all hospital policy and procedures, while upholding the high expectations of KVH.
• Attends various staff meetings and 100% mandatory in-services as required.
• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:Education / Licensure:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of CNA training program preferred.
• Knowledge/comprehension of basic medical terminology required.
• Basic computer skills required, experience with CPSI software preferred.

Experience:
• At least one year recent full time experience working in a unit secretary or in a clinic receptionist capacity required.

• Demonstrates knowledge of basic medical terminology.
• Requires critical thinking skills, ability to make good decisions, listen and accept advice from others, demonstrate maturity and good judgment and the ability to work with regular supervision.
• Promote/deliver excellent customer service to both internal (patients and staff) and external customers (visitors and vendors).
• Demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families, physicians, volunteers and community.
• Work productively, cohesively within a team and resolve conflict/differences in a positive manner.
• Work in a stressful/demanding environment and take appropriate action to ensure quality of patient care, ability to cope with both physical and emotional demands of the job.
• Maintain a calm and composed manner in emergency/stressful situations, taking appropriate action as necessary.
• Demonstrate attention to detail, follow oral and written instructions precisely, and maintain a high degree of accuracy; risk of error could result in significant harm or loss.
• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills with ability to anticipate tasks and prioritize assignments.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
• Experience with using everyday computer electronic tools (e.g., email, data retrieval, voicemail, and internet/intranet) as well as ability to effectively utilize an electronic medical record.
• Proficiency with basic computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel, and have good typing skills.
• Adaptability is essential to manage the needs of a department with unpredictable volume and resources.
